What is 3DS?
3DS (3D Secure) is a system employed by the banks to enhance the security of online card transactions by adding an additional layer of authentication. It requires the cardholder to complete an extra verification step, such as entering a password or a one-time code sent via SMS, during the payment process. The main goal is to reduce fraud and protect merchants from chargebacks.
For websites using Stripe
If you are using Stripe (our preferred payment gateway), and your payment page is using Stripe Elements (see image below), dynamic 3DS is automatically available to you to configure in the Stripe Dashboard.
Stripe Elements:
What is Dynamic 3DS?
Stripe provides disabled default Radar rules to dynamically request 3DS when creating or confirming a payment thru Stripe Elements. You can turn these rules on in your Stripe Dashboard.
Can I setup my own rules?
Yes you can, but you need to upgrade to Radar for Fraud Teams.
Examples of this could include:
- Request 3D Secure (3DS) for all payments that support it and are made by a new customer
- Block payments made from a location or card issued outside your country
For websites not using Stripe
Contact your payment gateway and see what options are available. Some payment gateways will require code / integration changes to use their 3DS flow.
